Melissa Chandon Opening 2024 at Tasende Gallery: A Sense of Place

Tasende Gallery is pleased to present Melissa Chandon – Paintings January 11 through February 3, 2024. Eight recent works emblematic of the American landscape and its architectural structures reminiscent of simpler times in America, comprise the exhibition.

Born in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1952 Melissa Chandon from a young age traveled extensively with her family throughout the United States. It was during these trips that she became captivated by the American landscape and roadside vernacular, and it is these memories that continue to inform her work.

The artist describes her approach as ‘abstract realism’. Using a minimalist approach with an intense color palette, she achieves a memorable sense of place. In her work Chandon pays homage to where we came from and also asks us to consider what we are building today.

Melissa Chandon received a BFA from Santa Clara University in California and MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Since 2009 she has lectured at University of California Davis and has been teaching Design there since 2013. The artist has also conducted numerous plein-air workshops in the US, France and Mexico. For several years she was mentored by Wayne Thiebaud at UC Davis. Chandon also acknowledges the influences of Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney and Edward Hopper.

A reception for the artist will be held Saturday February 3rd from 3 to 5pm.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm.
